Our Story

Outer Island Oysters is a father-and-son venture rooted in a shared love for the water and a deep respect for the ocean.

Zach Gordon has spent over a decade working in aquaculture—raising oysters and mussels, managing hatcheries, and contributing to research efforts focused on sustainable marine farming. In 2022, Zach began experimenting with growing sugar kelp in Long Island Sound as a side project, driven by his curiosity about the ways aquaculture can help restore and strengthen marine ecosystems.

That passion soon turned toward oysters. In 2025, Zach and his father, Mike, officially launched Outer Island Oysters, with a vision to bring exceptional, locally grown oysters to the community while honoring the environment that makes it all possible.

Our name is inspired by Outer Island, a protected nature preserve and part of the Thimble Islands. It’s a place that reflects everything we value—conservation, stewardship, and the belief that aquaculture can play a role in keeping our waters healthy for generations to come. Our oysters are grown in the waters near Outer Island, connecting every harvest to the unique ecosystem of Long Island Sound.

At Outer Island Oysters, we’re proud to grow oysters that are more than delicious—they’re part of a living cycle that gives back to the ocean we love.
